{"id":93,"date":"2013-07-15T01:26:51","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T01:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backroadswineries.com\/blog\/?p=93"},"modified":"2013-07-15T01:26:51","modified_gmt":"2013-07-15T01:26:51","slug":"paso-robles-vineyard-update-veraison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backroadswineries.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/15\/paso-robles-vineyard-update-veraison\/","title":{"rendered":"Paso Robles Vineyard Update: &#8220;Veraison&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Guest blog by Matt Merrill of <a title=\"Pomar Junction Vineyard and Winery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pomarjunction.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pomar Junction Vineyard and Winery<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s a bit early this year, but veraison has begun in many of the vineyards of the Paso Robles wine grape growing region.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backroadswineries.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/veraison-PR-2013c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-94\" title=\"Veraison Paso Robles 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backroadswineries.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/veraison-PR-2013c-1024x503.jpg\" alt=\"Veraison in Paso Robles 2013 - Pomar Junction Winery\" width=\"614\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The vineyards in the Paso Robles AVA are currently transitioning into a different phase of growth.\u00a0 The grapes on the vines are coming out of a period of berry growth and into the exciting period of berry ripening.\u00a0 This viticulture period is known as v\u00e9raison in the wine world.\u00a0 V\u00e9raison is a French term that means \u201cthe onset of ripening\u201d, although it is more known for the change of color of the grape berries.\u00a0 For red grape varietals the change in color is easy to spot as the green clusters have a few berries change to a light pink color.\u00a0 Those berries will darken and the rest of the cluster will follow suit until the entire cluster is fully darkened and the grape skins begin to soften.\u00a0 The white grape varietals are little more difficult to spot if they are going through v\u00e9raison.\u00a0 The biggest change is the feel of the berries as they begin to soften, but the clusters also begin to yellow a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the incomparable beauty of the clusters of multi-colored grapes hanging full on the vines, it is an exciting time in the vineyard because this signals that the upcoming harvest is approaching.\u00a0 The earlier the onset of v\u00e9raison, typically the earlier harvest will be.\u00a0\u00a0 This season the change in color is on the early side in Paso Robles.\u00a0 This has winemakers gearing up for what could be an early harvest.
